The historian Jan Grabowski, 2021/2022 IAS Distinguished Scholar, was appointed on November 2023, an honorary doctor at the Faculty of Humanities at Lund University, Sweden. Jan Grabowski, who is a Professor of History at the University of Ottawa, Canada, has spent the last twenty years researching issues related to Jewish-Polish relations during the Holocaust. His research has had a significant impact on the field of Holocaust studies, highlighting previously understudied aspects of Holocaust history. Among other things, his research sheds light on the so-called third phase of the Holocaust, or the period that followed the liquidations of the ghetto populations in occupied Europe.

Prof. Grabowski is the author of several monographs, including “Hunt for the Jews: Betrayal and Murder in German-Occupied Poland” (2013), which received the 2014 Yad Vashem International Book Prize. Together with Barbara Engelking, he has recently published “Night without End: The Fate of Jews in German-occupied Poland” (2022). Prof. Grabowski discussed the subject of the book during his visit as an IAS Distinguished Scholar at Tel Aviv University, in a podcast hosted by the Stephen Roth Institute in May 2022.

"Jan Grabowski is an international authority in research on anti-Semitism and the Holocaust," says Barbara Törnquist-Plewa, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. "By appointing him an honorary doctorate, the Faculty of Humanities strengthens its ties to a significant researcher in the field of Holocaust studies".

The Mortimer and Raymond Sackler Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) offers its warmest congratulations to Prof. Grabowski, on receiving the prestigious degree.
