Professor Alan Rogol

 

Prof. Alan D. Rogol, MD, Ph.D., Guest Lecturer at the Saul J. Farber Distinguished Lectures in Medicine Endowed by Raymond and Beverly Sackler for the academic year 2008/2009, is a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Virginia. Prof. Rogol also serves as the President of ODR Consulting, and as a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. 

 

Prof. Rogol received an S.B. in chemistry (in 1963) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), an M.D. in Medicine and a Ph.D. in Physiology from Duke University (1970). He completed an internship (1970-1971) and a residency (1971-1972) in pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Following a fellowship in endocrinology (1972-1974) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), he moved to the University of Virginia (UVA), serving as Professor of Pharmacology (1987-1999), Professor of Pediatrics (1984-1999), Chief of the Division of Endocrinology (1984-1999). In 1999, Prof. Rogol started to work in the pharmaceutical industry at INSMED Incorporated, as a Principal Clinical Scientist (1999-2002), managing a trial of the combination of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 combined. In parallel, he continued to serve as a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and to teach at UVA as a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics (1999-until his retirement). Prof. Rogol also serves since 2002 as the President of ODR Consulting, and since 2008 as a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. 

 

Prof. Rogol is an Emeritus Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, of the American College of Sports Medicine, and an Emeritus member of the American Pediatric Society. Prof. Rogol has been a member and Chief of the American Board of Pediatrics, sub-board in endocrinology; Secretary of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society (now known as the Pediatric Endocrine Society, 2004-2010), and has served as Vice-President of the Endocrine Society. 

 

Prof. Rogol’s interests in endocrinology have included growth and puberty and lately the endocrinology of sport and exercise. Prof. Rogol has published more than 500 scientific articles, is a member of several editorial boards, and was the co-editor of "The Encyclopaedia of Sports Medicine: An International Olympic Commission (IOC) Medical Commission Publication (vol 11): The Endocrine System in Sports and Exercise".
